Great Lakes Adventure Acronyms usually don’t stick with me, but I’ve never forgotten learning HOMES, the acronym for the Great Lakes. Remember? While most of us think of the lakes separately, all five – Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior – are actually connected through a series of waterways, forming one system that leads like aquatic steps from the headwaters of Lake Superior to the Atlantic Ocean.
A few years ago, our family took a memorable “Great Lakes Adventure” road trip. In addition to visiting all five lakes, we toured the lighthouse at Whitefish Point on Lake Superior, where the U.S. Coast Guard got its start, enjoyed a great day on Mackinac Island, and rode the Maid of the Mist into the swirling fog created by the thundering Niagara Falls. The original story was published in Highways magazine, the magazine for members of the Good Sam Club. You can click Great Lakes Adventure to read the entire story and see more photos from our trip. |
